Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is a hardy shrub native to Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, thriving in temperate climates. It typically grows in woodlands, along riverbanks, hedgerows, and open fields, favoring rich, well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. Elderberry shrubs are known for their clusters of small white or cream-colored flowers and deep purple to black berries, which ripen in late summer to early fall.
This adaptable plant can flourish in both wild and cultivated environments, making it a common sight in rural landscapes and gardens alike. Its widespread growth and resilience have made elderberry a valued plant historically, both for its nutritional and medicinal properties, as well as its spiritual and protective associations.
