Dowsing rod (also called a divining rod or witching rod) is a simple tool traditionally used to locate underground water, minerals, or other hidden objects. It’s most often associated with water dowsing, an old practice where someone holds a forked or L-shaped rod and walks slowly over an area, watching for the rod to move or dip — supposedly signaling the presence of water or other materials below ground.
How People Use Them
- The dowser lightly holds the rods, keeping them balanced but free to move.
- While walking over a site, the rods may cross, swing, or dip when the dowser feels they’ve found the target (often water).
- Some modern practitioners also use rods for spiritual or energy work, such as finding “energy lines” or answering yes/no questions.
Modern Use
Even though it’s not scientifically supported, many people still use dowsing rods for:
- Locating water wells (especially in rural areas)
- Paranormal investigations
- Energy healing or spiritual divination
- Personal intuition practice
