Anise star, also known as star anise (Illicium verum), is a spice native to Southeast Asia, particularly in regions such as southern China, Vietnam, and Laos. The tree that produces this distinctive spice grows in the tropical forests of these areas, thriving in the warm, humid climate. Star anise is derived from the star-shaped fruit of the Illicium verum tree, which belongs to the Schisandraceae family.
The spice has been used for centuries in both culinary and medicinal applications, and its unique, sweet, licorice-like flavor is highly prized in Asian cuisine, especially in dishes like Chinese five-spice powder and in various soups, teas, and stews. Beyond its culinary uses, star anise has a long history of being used in traditional medicine for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and digestive properties.
The plant itself flourishes in the subtropical and tropical climates of the region, where it produces small, greenish flowers that eventually develop into the star-shaped fruits. These fruits are harvested when mature and dried to develop the aromatic spice that has made star anise a staple in kitchens and herbal remedies across the world.
